I See Us Beautiful

You have always been there,

in shadows of my life,

beautiful, brave mother

You were fairy godmother to a flung child,

a safety net made out of spider’s fragile web,

a promise that I never thought to be kept

yet, here you are,

heartful of my dance

we are found on different paths

and you gather us, like bent-head blossoms

as if you were to blame

for our transplanting

lift your head mother, we come to honor you,

for the genes that carry strength, that know sorrow, yes,

like we know love by its opposite

oh, dearest, let me honor you now,

while I can, for I have known

your buttery sun wave

in cell memory that scrolled like dreams,

slightly edited, but captured, now and again,

on the gray of a cloud, or the pale sheet of illness,

and even on the sun when I stared long enough..

I see you beautiful in your old age.

I see you in my beautiful old age.
