Introducing Maine Poet - JustNed/dillpickle 62

They Call Me “The Off The Cuff Blue Coll’r Poet”
I was born in the spring of 1962 in Bar Harbor on Mount Desert Island, Maine.
I’m not going to lie to you and tell you it’s been easy. I’ve written a “Dear God” letter and a will from a very cold, worried hand. Even now, I sit writing in this cold cabin due to wood stove problems, of which I will have to ask the ol’woodsman about. It is 45 degrees at my desk as I write about the poetry and my way of life in the woods of Otis, Maine.
Writing has seen me through many hard times throughout my life. My own “politically free” poetry {on paper seen} has made me laugh under some extreme conditions. It has helped me figure out life’s problems and capture in ink the “Muse” of my dreams.
Poetry is a way of life for me, a way to involve and bring together people from all walks of life and ages. Having been discovered while a custodian at Ellsworth High School by students and members of the English Dept., I was coaxed to attend my first open-mic reading at Hammond Hall in Winter Harbor. I won’t say I wasn’t nervous. I had the kids behind me, that’s why I finally went public. I was also pushed by Phil Wormuth, a Hancock County Technical Center English teacher {now, my Agent.}
Here, in the peacefulness of nature, I have sat through three seasons in the woods of Otis, Maine writing poetry, sharing stories, while living new ones…sharing space with Rascal, the chipmunk, Primer,the bear {who I met as a cub,} A.J., the blind rabbit, and howling coyotes… and let’s not forget the busy beavers!
I have sat at my picnic table with the warmth of a summer’s sun against my back, wrapped within the scents of spring and the fall leaves under foot, writing of babbling brooks, blackberries, and a dill pickle juice-drinking Bigfoot in cahoots with aliens. I have sat reflecting on some very special and artistic young people that I have met in my travels.
I write for the enjoyment that it brings to people, sharing all that I have learned and experienced, and to show the young that, if they put their minds to whatever they wish to accomplish, it can happen {even if it is twenty-five years later!}
I have been writing poetry and short stories since 1976. If anything, I have always been a writer, a poet. Poetry is a great way for the young and old to come together, connect. Recently, I had the opportunity to read and participate in the “GEN NEX Poetry Project” produced an anthology of local poets under thirty. Sitting in the front row was an eight-year-old. Her face was red with laughter. I almost didn’t get through the piece I was reading…For me, that is Poetry.  JustNed

I do not suffer from writer’s block. Having way too many projects and not enough time. I am currently working on two books. “Maine Short, Short Stories as Told” and “All The Sense of Summer” a book of prose and poetry. I live my books, my writings. Having been giftedly born into hilarious situations and surviving quite by accident. I am now able to share the wealth of imagination with the public through the written word. I’d have to say that my favorite poem is “The Perfect Pearl”. Because she lives.  She is Mon Muse…

Kaibab

Although Kaibab may take umbredge at my egotistical presumption, I must say…

…of any writer I have ever been led to, Kaibab’s writing is most common to mine that I have ever found.

In Kaibab’s words:

“I feel a sound in my soul as if a heartbeat from another lifetime is trying to tell me something I have already learned in some other language I haven’t spoken for eons….and surrendering my barriers to this energy cloud I have learned to believe in…words surprise me as they find their way into my fingers…in the presence of Nature… I find my art.”

Welcome to Wolfheart

Welcome to a new poet friend.  She is from Oregon and a wonderful collector of poets on her own.  Welcome to the Pack of Poets, friend.

Carol Knepper

I have spent the greater part of this year being the recipient of soul gifts from Carol Knepper, New Brunswick poet.  Recently, I received a  poem evolved from a piece of writing I had done.  This was more than a mere sharing of poetry.  This was her dip into the depths of who I am.  For this, I return her gift of singing psalms.

Carol’s ability to transform nature into observations of human nature, is keen.  She writes of how “gardener’s bones tell the story of my love of nature to the balmy breeze.” (To the Balmy Breeze, June 2006) and this, perhaps, defines the stance she takes in the world where she, herself is a gardener of blossoming words and phrases.

One of my favorite poems of hers is “In Vibrant Harmony” where she fills the poem with
Phrase petals of extraordinary evocative descriptions.
 “…crabtrees reach,,
 …blossoms dapple…
 …luscious note..
 …enchanting on the evening breeze…
 …chartreuse exclamations…
 ..colors of Creator…”
The poem simply vibrates with the very harmony she speaks of.

In another poem, “We Are The Beauty”, she speaks to the soul’s oneness with nature
And how human beings are the autumn leaves, the fragrance, the rainbow, the surging sea and placid lake.  She opens up and allows her readers to see what is in her soul.  It is peace and oneness that resides in her very bones.

She is a nature poet that uses nature to speak to the nature of man.  She uses her keen observation and time spent in the Garden of Life to express life and all that surrounds her with childlike, pure, wonder and faith.

“Lessons of the Feeder” shows this keen observation through poignant phrases where the feathered friends “squawk and bicker” over seed until they have each had their fill and peace in the garden is returned.  Her affection for nature and its inhabitants is evident in every write.  The desire for peace resonates, poem after poem, until we are convinced to be gentler towards all beings in the garden.

Carol Knepper knows, without a doubt, that we all have an indisputable place in this Garden.  Her gentle persuasion as she interprets her devotion to Creator, Man and Nature is evident in all her writing.  I am honored to be a recipient of her wise words and know they ripple out into the Universe like the song of a beautiful bird.

Richard Doiron

Richard Doiron is first and foremost a poet. Without doubt one of history’s most prolific writers ever, his main poetic themes are Love, Peace, and Spirituality. Never much of a reader of books,
he finds inspiration in Nature and in humanity. For over forty years he has experienced a steady
outpouring of words. Asked about his “gift,” he invariably says he finds it hard to say he writes anything. Instead, he more often than not avers that he is merely there when the poetry comes, in that sense seeing himself as a channel.
