A First Nations Leader For Canada - Yes, We Can

A friend asked us to comment on Canada eventually having a First Nations’ Leader. Here is my reply:

That would be awesome if we could have one who could figure out how to be truly traditional and contemporary. I have had friends who tried combining both politics ( Band leadership) and traditional and one is always hurt by it. I know many who would do a fine job as well. How does one keep their integrity and yet be able to be involved in such a corrupt BUSINESS?

I was totally hoping for Obama and his speech afterwards was an example of why. Not “I” “me” “Mine”….it was all about “us” and what work we all needed to do now. I was so grateful to see such a man give this his best shot.

I will be in Canada about ten more days, then, home and healthy.

Harvest Moon - August 23 - September 22

Neil Young - Harvest Moon

I live in one of the most beautiful areas for Fall to flutter her most beautiful veils by being painted by The Great Hand.  We have had incredibly rainy weather:  25 days of rain in 27 days.  On our drive over to New Hampshire, the hint of fall is beginning to show.  A few low-lying bushes have blushed.  We have had the eclipses.  We have just gone through a period of moon’s influence on friendships.  We now move into the next moon, where there is enlightenment, sudden ecstasies, and new beginnings.

This will be a time of deep introspection, a craving for solitude, empathy rules, you will come closer to loving Self, and ancients’ voices will be heard.  We sever ourselves from our spring and summer childhood and begin to forge a sense of authority over our old sense of helplessness, vulnerability, apathy, loneliness, fear and solitude.  This is a time of color.  The chokecherries are ripe, the leaves become saturated with bright paints, and the moon grins wide and yellow from the horizon.

The power animal for this moon is the Bear.  This will be a time of creative curiosity, for you.  The colors around you will spark your intuition to create.  You will be asked to help, and to give service as you will have a more generous heart.  You will be more level-headed and making decisions are more easily accomplished.   Be patient with others.  Find someone to mentor.  Be aware not to be critical of others, or fall into bitterness and become cynical.  If you do not curb yourself and work for the positive, you can become skeptical, slothful, small-minded and reclusive.  This is a time the bear dances in celebration of harvest.  Sometimes he can become very single-minded.  Take care to notice all around you and where you might be of service to the world in some small way.

The mineral is the Amethyst.  I have placed an amethyst ¾ of the way up the fourth quadrant.  This reminds us to have good judgment and to be just in all our dealings with others and ourselves.  It is a good healing stone for transitions.  It aids us on our journey and eases difficulties.  You will find your heart yearning for higher levels of spirituality during this time.  Holding amethyst while you meditate raises vibrational energy and transforms energy to a deeper level of consciousness.  It also helps awaken physical, intellectual, emotional, and physical consciousness.  If you are grieving, it can help you accept that passage of a lost one and helps you to understand death is but another rebirth.  Amethyst can also be worn in your medicine pouch to ward off negativity and manipulation.  If you have trouble sleeping, placing an amethyst under your pillow will enable deeper more restful sleep.  It will also calm disrupted energy.  Amethyst, as a stone of peace, encourages purity and unification.  It is a carrier of peaceful serenity and allows for calmness of outside things so one might be spiritually awake rather than conscious of worldly angst.

The color of this moon, then, is purple.  It is associated with nobility and spirituality.  It is not often that we consider these two things together:  Our nobility is what we have done to develop our spirituality.  The color has everything to do with wise gratitude and the healing that comes from being grateful.  Consider the lavender, orchid, lilac and violets flowers.  They are delicate and precious.  You may find yourself sink into moodiness during this time.  Using lavender oil, a well-place violet plant, lilac incense, etc, will help to alleviate this angsty sense you may have.  The color is reminiscent of sky at dusk and the passage of one reality into another.

Following the color scheme, of course, the plant is the violet.  It represents the secret, sacred, regions of one’s heart.  Violet is good for suppressing appetite, and is good for migraine suffers to have in the house and to waft the scent throughout the house.  It provides a peaceful environment.  There is more the plant can do for you.  It will remind you to be modest, to be faithful, to be virtuous, affectionate, in all areas of your life.  I have scattered silk violet blossoms around the outer stones on the medicine wheel out in the Medicine garden.  I have put them in the bowl that holds the amethyst stones, for this moon, on the altar in the house.  I need all the help I can get.

The clan of this month is the Turtle Clan.  The turtle symbolizes longevity and is the keeper of the doors that we pass through during times of transition.  The turtle reminds us to pace ourselves.  Don’t rush so.  There is much to know during this moon.  Turtles remind us that the way to heaven is through earth and what we have gathered as memories here will go with us.  Be conscious of the memories you are collecting.  Live in the present moment and know it for all it is worth.  Just as the turtle cannot separate itself from its shell and live, we cannot separate ourselves from what we will know in heaven and we have done here on earth.  Walk lightly and know what it is you walk upon.

The element of this moon is Earth.  Honor and respect women.  Men are to be involved in rituals, to go to ceremonies and to encourage dreaming during this time.  Women do not have to do more than sustain each other and the earth as that is the way of them.  They promise generations.  The harvest of these generations is how she has raised and treated the younger generations.  Women should gather roots and herbs and harvest gardens and flowers.  It is god to work the soil later in the moon so that it will ensure a good crop next year.  Care for it as you would bed down a precious child.  There are certain foods that are healing for body, mind and soul, during this time.  Be sure to partake and honor the three sisters (squash and beans and corn) as these three sisters remind us of our communal necessities.  If you can get venison, this is a good time to partake of the gifts of innocence and gentleness.  Turkey is the symbol of sacrifice for the good of others, it is important to share (Kentucky Fried Chicken for Thanksgiving dinner does not count.  Smile.)  Eat apples and know the healing of this fruit.  Use cornmeal in your ceremonies and a mornings’ breakfast of cornmeal muffins, bread, porridge, is healthiest for you during this moon.  Pumpkin is an important medicine as well.  It is symbolic of personal power.  Grains and wheat will balance your health as well.

Remember, Earth is womb.  She is all we need; protects us, nurtures us, sustains us, and we must do the same for her.  You are encouraged to slow down and heighten your senses.  See the connections of all things.  Earth work and duty will weigh heavily on you this moon.  Use good sense, confidence and analysis…as I said earlier, pace yourself, do not rush.    Above all, remember to be grateful and thankful for everything you see, smell, hear, feel, touch and do.

More Gifts - They Gather…..

I went outside and taking to my daughter on phone…my foot bumps into something…a POW/MIA medal…. no one here knows anything about it nor Jen either…it was sticking out of dirt…then……I walked on and right by a stone I have been at a million times…..there are the chrysollis poking out… I undercover many stones…near the sweat….

I said, “Wouldn’t it be something if there were 61?” Richard as my witness, I counted every one I found as I pawed through the mat of soil….61.

Unbelievable…. I had given offering for the one and now here are all these…… something wonderful afoot…… I must drive and find the stones for the sweat…they are gathering.

Red Moon - July 22 - August 23

I hang raspberry red cloth out today, in the sacred ground area of our forest to honor the Red Moon of July 23 – August 22. I place iron in its appropriate place in the Medicine Circle and a stone that holds garnets are in position in the circle I have made outside in one of the Rock Gardens.

Red Moon:

The moon widens herself so she can have more of the sun.  The moon kisses the colors that are nodded off by a river where the sturgeon slumber against the banks.  The second moon of the Southern Direction; the ripe berry moon lays in waiting.  This time is closely watched by thunderbird and his influence is felt.  Red berries burst in joy and a red flag resides on the sacred lodge pole.  Iron strength may be needed at this time.   Garnet reminds us that the source of that strength is our heart.  The Raspberry reminds us to find the sweetness amidst the thorns.

Stone:   Garnet can help to balance your sexual energies. Have you been a bit off?  Remember how holy sexuality is, how good and honorable a gift it is.  Garnet is associated with the heart and blood and you should carry this or wear it, so your emotions are more free-flowing, and this authentic.  Garnet has also been known to be one stone that can warn you of danger.  It should buzz or you feel it vibrating if it is trying to warn you of something.

Iron is paired with the garnet as mineral because it is good for the blood and heart. It reminds you that there are times you must be tempered by life to learn lessons, betimes.  What are you made of?  Are you as strong as you should be, are you walking your own talk?  You may be about to find out.

Raspberries are the symbolic plant for this moon.  This delicate medicine plant is medicine from its roots to its tips.  They are good for digestion, can be used to help expel gallstones and kidney stones, and the roots are an astringent and antibiotic.  The roots can be dried and ground and used as a gargle for sore throats and the roots can be steeped and applied to slow bleeding.  The tea from the leaves help with diarrhea, cankers, and menstrual problems.  Also, I was given raspberry leaf tea when I was pregnant for the uterus health, as well.  The branches are dried and ground and used for colds, flues, breathing difficulties and to balance sugar levels.  What an incredible plant; a gift.

The raspberry works in your life to remind you to be affection but to take care of your boundaries.  During this time, expect these issues to come up in your life.  Face your fears and be a leader not a follower.  You may be called to develop your courage and personal power.

The sturgeon is the swimming being guardian during this time.  Guard against being impulsive Beware of arrogance.  Do not be tempted to dominate anything.  You will be called to be determined and to persevere.   At your very depths is the knowledge you need.  During this time, consider sexuality problems and know you can say “No” when you feel like it.  There will be unwanted energies around you and you need to be able to have the strength to say “No”.

You need not be thorny about it, but you may need to protect yourself.  It is very good to eat the berries during this month, but do not overdo it.  Remember, they are medicine first.  You are apt to meet a few thorny people, people who can be ‘a thorn in the side’ that will irritate you, and cause you discomfort and worry you.  Be aware of energies you do not need to waste.  Clear away your energy through ceremony during this time.  You will need your energy before too long a time; real energy for important things, not the little annoying things.

This Morning’s Gift

This morning, I was giving the gardens their morning visit.  In the wishing well, where the gourds have stems two inches thick, I noticed a little blue spot.  I remember seeing a touch of tiny blue a few days ago but had not uncovered it… this morning, I picked it up.  It is a stone foreign to this land.  I have no idea where it came from other than from the little people… There are many stories of the Little People, that come from many different tribes.  I must tell you a little of them, and carefully so, for this is not the time to talk too much about them.  In this way, I honor them in my life.  I have received unexplainable gifts from time to time, and know where they come from.

They are good spirits but must be treated with great respect.  I will give them an offering of cornbread, as I have been taught to do.  It is said that they gather gifts for us, during the night, in some places, when the whippoorwill signals their time to come.

There is a story, I will share:

Makiaweesug

Long ago, before White people came, there were giants and little people as well. These “little people” were called Makiaweesug by the Mohegan, and those who were especially perceptive could see them sometimes in the woods. They were generally friendly to the Indian people, especially if they were left alone. The Little People were quite shy, and if you stared at them, they would point their finger at you and then you could no longer see them, and they could cause mischief and you wouldn’t know whether they were doing it or whether it was just an accident.

If the Makiaweesug came to your house asking for food, you should always give them what they wanted. Otherwise, they might point at you so you couldn’t see them and then take whatever food they wanted. And even if the Little People did not come to your house, it was a good idea to leave some food for them so they would not have to come up to the house. Small baskets were made for this purpose, and the Mohegan left these baskets with food at the edge of the woods so the Little People could take it and not bother the people.

Although the Little People were shy, they occasionally needed the help of Indian people. On one dark and stormy night, a Mohegan man and his wife were at home by their fire. They heard a rap on the side of their wigwam, and the woman went to see who it was. The wind blew in as she opened the door to see who was there. A Little Person was there-a man-but she thought it was a boy. He said that he needed her help because his wife was sick. She packed up a few things and told her husband that she was going out to help the man. With the Little Man leading her, she walked on and on through the storm, and the woman didn’t know where she was being taken. At last she saw a light in front of her, and there was a house. Saying nothing, the Little Man led her inside and showed her his wife: a Little Woman lying ill on a bed of skins. The Mohegan woman was surprised, because it was at that point that she realized that she was with the Little People. But keeping her surprise to herself and not asking any questions, she doctored the Little Woman and stayed with them until the Little Woman was well again.

Because the Little Woman was better, it soon was time for the Mohegan woman to go back to her own wigwam. The Little People gave her presents, thanking her for the kindness she had shown in leaving her own home to take care of the sick Little Woman. The Mohegan woman packed up her belongings and medicines and then the Little Man put a skin blindfold over her eyes and led her away from their house and back to her own. When they arrived, she took the blindfold off, but the Little Man was already gone and she could not tell which direction they had come.

She told her husband about her adventure and they wanted to find the Little People and looked and looked for them but couldn’t find them. Some think that the Little People died out when the Whites came, but the Mohegan feel that they just live far back in the woods and show themselves only to those who still believe in them.

You may have been visited and gifted, and not even know where these gifts came from.  As for me, I DO know and now I must honor their visit and know the meaning of the gift of Chrysocolla they brought to me.

Chrysocolla reminds us to learn to balance the earth and sky within us.  Its gifts are harmony, the easing of anxiety within, and releases negativity. This stone also, and this is very significant, aids arthritis.  Keeping this stone in my medicine bag will thwart negativity coming at me from other persons.

I have had need of the gift of Chrysocolla, just now, and all the gifts it brings to me.  It is now in my medicine bag I wear next to my heart.  It is primarily related to the throat chakra…the need to speak one’s truths gently.  This gift is VERY pertinent in all things, to me…. in honoring this gift, and those that brought it to a place that has never seen such stone other than one, Lucy, sent me from Northern Saskatchewan, and has been in my medicine bag since it arrived.  Whenever we see or receive something uncommon, we know we have not had any other way to receive…how do we know it but a spiritual gift?
